Indigo’s remix of Synkro’s “Progression” was one of my favorites late last year. Above anything, it was a good fellow for studying (if you want to remember it, it’s on the bottom). Hence, I haven’t hesitated when the homonym “Indigo” EP popped out weeks ago. And I haven’t regretted a single bit since then. Now these three tracks continue the previous exploration and development of dark bass (especially in “Neveah”). “Primal” assumes influences of science fiction OST’s ’end of the world’-alike, but “Lacuna” is all dub and dubstep directioned. Without a doubt, he maintains himself as a guy to watch.

Bedroom pop producer Tropical Tobacco left home, met friends of Colour Is A Common Mistake, and together they built a new identity they identified as “JUBA” (for the foreigners, “juba” is the Portuguese word to designate “mane”). Both projects stand well with each other, as stated on their present fusion. From it resulted “Bloodvessels” (above, which reminds me I should take a look on vascular notes) and “Lion King” (below, filmed last summer holidays). Neglecting the presence of Makoto Yagyu (PAUS, Riding Pânico, If Lucy Fell) and Fábio Jevelim (Blasfemea, Men Eater, Riding Pânico) in the production of their 1st single would be silly, because their personal touch is unmistakable. Moreover, it was recorded at Blacksheep Studios. Last week they won the contest “+1 Banda Myspace” (powered by Red Bull Tour Bus). Congratulations guys! Now, good luck and keep going.

Without intending to be ghastly, what 1st came to my mind the 1st time I listened Halls’ debut LP, even without knowing the title of each track (since I was doing it in a blind way) was ‘This could perfectly be played on a memorial service. It sounds like it’. In point of fact, when I checked their names my suspicions came true – they pointed to funerals, churches, cemeteries and explicit aspects of Christianity. “Ark” represents the next big step Sam Howard needed to give after the 2 stunning EP’s we’ve also listened here. His previous music was already known to be melancholic; however in the full length that feeling reaches its peak – the sadness maturity as a reflex of the development of the 21-year-old artist. As it happened before (not worrying about having or not misunderstood the whole thing), I’ve identified myself with the mournful feeling transversal to the entire record. Besides, Halls picked up a very dear style of music to me: church music. Even though there are also drums, strings and other stuff, this is fundamentally church music weighed with the best of electronic music – the synthesizers and drum machines. Once upon a time I had convent education, and we had frequently to practice on choirs and instruments to play along with organ in the mass. I remember how I loved it, though I’ve never learnt how to play organ. With time I’ve kept away from all of it, nevertheless I felt tender when I met it again on “Ark”. His vocals fluctuate between high and low pitch, sometimes monotonic, as if the artist is singing for himself, only voicing his low spirits and soreness. But then oh! when the drums come in in crescendo it’s like a drama movie scene (e.g. Barry Lyndon or something similar) – it’s impressive! Nonetheless, there’s not only place for hopelessness and a certain degree of despair. In the end, tracks like “Holy Communion” and “Winter Prayer” bring a certain degree of a new light and peace for the future. Perhaps, that was the message Sam intended to leave to the world.

It’s not like if I was praising this very peculiar social problem (which I’m obviously not, moral apart) nor its consequences, however Duke Dumont’s passage to Lisbon made me run straightly to “Street Walker” as if I was an addicted or something like that. The sensation of “OMG that bass” I’ve lost in the middle of electro period ages ago and those distorted vocals similar those of someone who is very drunk but insists on beating the rap here and there interpolated with pure synths (the biggest contrast here) are the kick in the ass (read as “right stimulus”) someone needs to exercise properly the pelvic joints. “There’s a woman/ In the street/ Street seller/ Often by the (…) / Uh, wait a minute”.

Never mind if it was premiered on Pitchfork, since if it’s beautiful then it must be shared! WIFE is James Kelly’s side project (keep in mind he’s the mentor of Altar of Plagues, Irish black metal band). I could never fully (nor partly) understand why did some men from metal have such a deep relationship with electronic music. I can’t bear metal, and I’ve even given up to try it many years ago. But sometimes we’re touched by things like this and we become no more no less than speechless. I’ve no idea if the forthcoming (and suggestive) “Stoic” EP on left_blank next month will follow this leitmotif (the same we found for example in Shlohmo, Sekuoia, Soosh, IVVVO and several other artists from these days). What I’m pretty sure at the moment is that “Bodies” and its video is a bite of the cherry.

P.S.: My deepest apologies for not posting a single line in the last weeks, but as I’ve said some months ago, these two last college years would be difficult and time consuming. I’m spending most of my days on coffee, ECG interpretation, and working on my thesis, which is obviously driving me nuts. I haven’t checked my inbox, but I’ll do it, it’s promised! Like I said before, while we were teenagers, in the mid of the 00’s decade, we witnessed the arising and the subsequent fall down of many pop-electronic projects (some were in fact good ideas that unfortunately didn’t succeed in our country). Today when I accidentally hit Golden Bambi’s video (thank you Anarchicks!) I had the pure sensation of going back to fifteen and rediscovering the genre. Golden Bambi are a duo (XMRR & BlackBambi) about to release their two debut songs on Tunacat. Yet being a rewriting of an old story, they’re not fixed on a specific influence, which makes them ear-catching. More precisely, even though “Little Things” has its own amount of Gaga, they push it up somehow like Queen of Hearts, while “Rabbits” is sexy. Period. Summarily: “This is so wonderful, there’s not a chance to let you go”.

Matt built Luminary Youth’s identity in the right time and direction. We’ve been following his music taken out of the reign of fantasy for about two years, and we never ever get disappointed. Incredibly, he pushes out the best of his role-models and sends the love from Orlando to the world. Probably, last year you’ve stepped by “Weekend Dreams”, an album that reconstructed some outstanding songs at the time (e.g. Washed Out, Memoryhouse, Warpaint), so you realize his potential. Yesterday he put out a new EP, as he loves to do, completely for free. Fuse with the dearest synthwave, chopped beats and vocals à la Star Slinger, and have a good night of sleep!
